Neither.
It's not that I dislike the songs, it's just that I'd rather jab a sharp object into both of my ears than hear either of those songs again. They're so overplayed that my 7 year old is sick of hearing them.

Stairway To Heaven

Stairway to Heaven. The solo is ascending to a climax. After the solo, it's the climax, where the true heavy metal sort of part plays in. Then it ends quietly, but nicely.
On the other hand, Free Bird ascends to a climax. Then the climax ends, but the song never really had that ending feeling to it. Plus, it fades while Stairway to Heaven actually ends.
But of course, the solos aren't the entire part of both songs. I like Stairway to Heaven better also because of Bonham's powerful rhythmic drumming, especially during the acoustic part. John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page play a great part after the solo too.
Both are pretty overrated though. Skynyrd and Zeppelin have other good songs too! And it's not just about the damn solos!

both songs are on my top 10 list of classic rock songs of all time "stairway to heaven at #1 and freebird at #2

For me, Freebird. I find it superior in every aspect. They are both a little overplayed, but Freebird, has the better gutiar licks, and I prefer the Van Zant vocals. I'm probably a bit biased though, because I really do not enjoy Led Zeppelin.

You're comparing apples to oranges. Freebird is southrn rock while Stairway To Heaven is progressive rock/heavy metal strongly influenced by British folk music.
However, I would have to pick "Stairway To Heaven". Freebird is ok but sometimes while listening to it I picutre a bunch of barefooted rednecks.

Being from J-ville Fla, I have to say Freebird. Zep is good but for this particular question Freebird takes it. Those Rednecks outplayed Jimmy on that one.
