Check your pilot light on the water heater if it is out try and relight it folling the instructions on the heater if it lights and will not stayon when you let go of the pilot button that means the thermocouple is bad and will need replaced this is the small copper like tube that goes from the gas valve to the pilot area of the burner they are very easy to replace and very cheap to buy at menards or home depot or even a local hardware store will carry them most common is 24".
To replace it first turn off the gas then loosen the end of this tube that goes into the gas valve you will only need a small cresent wrench or pliers will work after you have it loose then proceed to loosen the other two lines as well and remove them all this will allow you to remove the burner assembly and you will see very clearly now how this thing is replaced once you have it installed like it was just quickly blow the dust and rust out of the burner then using a flashlight put the burner back in place the light will help you get it back in the holding braket inside the burner compartment this will be in the middle of the floor of the water heater once you have completed this hook the gas lines back up in there proper holes being very careful not to strip the threads on the fittings then tighten them back up turn gas on check for leaks using liquid dish soap if leaks are detected the soap will bubble up then just tigthen fitting until leak stops.then follow the lighting instructions and in about a half hour you will have hot water again.
If this is not your bag call a plumber and they will gladly do this for between $50 and $100.

My guess is it is an electric water heater in which case the heating element, or elements have gone out. Easy reasonably priced fix. Turn off the supply of water to the heater, drain it (should have a garden hose hook up. remove the elements should be a plug on them and four screws, replace, end of problem.

If you have a water heater that plugs into the electrical outlet, try unplugging it for 3 minutes then plug it back in, it will reset itself.
If it don't plug in then your pilot light may be out, look under the water heater and see if you see a tiny flame under there. If not then it is your pilot light. You will need to read your owners manual or the side of the water heater and see how to relight it or call someone and have them do it for you.

As above, or;
Burned out heating element if electric.
Pilot light out if gas.
Or some fool turned off the valve at the heater.
