I've always wanted to build a car or motorcycle from the frame up, but I don't have much experience. So I figured I might start with a dirt bike. Is this something someone with little experience can tackle? Where do I start looking for the frame and guts? Is there helpful websites or books I should check into?

Actualy you could easyer build a Custom Street bike using a S&S Harlly type engine. Dirt bikes are more complicated due to the bumps.

I built one from the frame up. I started with two dirt bikes and I lost interest quick. Then I found a rigid frame sporty for 1500 bucks.

I soon found out that I was paying my tuition in bike building through miswired solenoids, buying parts that don't fit etc.

it cost more money than you think, so make sure it's something you really want.

buy the parts book to see more exploded views
buy the clymer book and the manufactureres book and haynes if they have it. You will need to cross ref. all books because the answers are not clear and sometimes not even there.

Not economic. Spares are extremely expensive. Non standard is worthless. Only eye candy sells at a premium. Buying a running bike is cheaper.

have to agree with above post...

dirt bikes are pretty complicated with having high tech suspension, lightweight frames, high horsepower, low center of gravity, etc. etc. etc.

would think a street bike could be a easier task especially without some pretty serious experience...

could also find a salvage yard in your area and buy parts and pieces and stick them together to start off with to get the hang of it...

good luck !!!

You could buy an old beater, tear it apart and build it back up with your own mods and tweaks. This will get your feet wet before a major project. Check out ebay or put an ad on craigslist looking for one. Otherwise you could probably find some good used parts on ebay.

Look for a kit bike. That way you'll get a frame, and instructions.

Go to www.jirehcycles.com and check out there custom bike kits. They are priced right and look good too. This is where I would start my search man. Good luck.
