i have kept guinea pigs and rabbits as pets for over 10 years!
they are great pets, fairly easy to look after and not too expensive to keep.
Draw up a shortlist of all the pets you are thinking about, do some research on them, and see what you think you can manage and afford
good luck!

There are 2 pets that I can think of that would work well for you - a guinea pig or a rabbit. Guinea pigs are supposed to be not only really easy to take care of, but also very playful and good-tempered, according to everything that I've read about them.
Rabbits are playful and fairly easy to take care of, if you constantly handle them while they're still young. The only thing about rabbits though, is that they tend to play "tip the food bowl", which is why I'd reccommend one of those food bowls that attach to the side of the cage if you decide to get a rabbit.

A guinea pig sounds perfect! They have a lot of the good, playful qualities of a dog, with half of the responsibility. They will not have problems with the other animals, since you will only take it out of the cage when they are in the other room.

There are over 1000 guinea pigs up for adoption on petfinder.com. Just enter "Small and Furry" in the search area, and then select "guinea pig" and enter your zip code. It's also a good place to explore other types of pets that might be right for you.

hedgehogs. if you can find one they are an excellant pet. they grow to a size between a guinea pig and a golden hampster. another great bet is a ferret, they are extremely playful, as long as a cat and as tall as a large hampster, they go through tunnels and roll in balls and are great to hang with.though you should wear glove for the first while, they do bite. they can hold their own agaist a cat, and usually dogs don't bug them, they can come a bit more expensive, but if there is a large spca near by, they sometimes have abandoned ones. the price will be worth it as they are long lasting if treated right.
