I currently am working to finish my bachelor's degree and I worked in the hotel business for approx. 5 years prior to now. I am working for the Chamber of Commerce in my area at the moment and have become friends with the owner of a hotel in the area that is a Chamber member. They are currently looking for a General Manager and I would love the position. I need to know a way to let her know that I am interested and want to be considered. I am still working on my bachelor's degree but will be done in one year. How do I go from friend to Employee!??

I don't have a degree yet, so should I even approach her. The position is for a General Manager of a Comfort Suites and I have worked as a Front Office Manager for Sheraton for 1 year. I have worked in other hotels for 5 years but only 1 year of mgt experience.

Good Question... Go to lunch with the owner and talk to him about the position and have a resume typed up to show him how qualified you are for the job. He should consider it and give you his answer worst thing can happen is he says no.

If she's a friend, she probably knows of your qualifications and may just be waiting for you to make the first approach. If she hasn't mentioned the position, speak up and tell her you're interested. If she doesn't know your background, then submit a resume. You certainly have as much chance as any other similarly qualified applicant. I realize your friendship with her might have some conflicting overtones, but I know of many people who have a social relationship as well as a working one with their employers. If she is an ethical person, she will not hire you on the basis of favoritism, but on your qualifications. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Good luck!

You'd say "I'm very interested in being considered for the GM position you have open." But if you don't have experience in hotel management, don't expect to actually get the job. You don't say what your work "in the hotel business" consisted of, so it might or might not qualify you for the job.

If she's a friend, and you want the job, you need to tell her. But in order for her to take you seriously, you need to have a resume put together, and give it to her. If you're qualified for the position, you'll be considered. Otherwise, no harm done. Good luck!
