The former describes the relationship, the latter describes a specific action that may or may not occur within the relationship. Simple as that.
Also, the latter may occur within "straight" relationships, too.

Because the 2 are totally different concepts. For instance, gay relationship is between 2 people of the same gender. Sodomy can occur regardless of the gender of the participants.

Possibly because we have grown wiser over the years, realizing that where previously we were ignorant of the reality that it was just like straight sexual relationships only with same sex partners, that these persons were in love and sodomy was such a perjorative term. It is unecessary to put negative labels on love between adults.

Sodomy isn't exclusive to gay people, and not all gay people subscribe to sodomy. You don't have to have an sexual relationship at all to be gay. Different states have different definitions of sodomy as well - for some, oral sex is sodomy. Sodomy is a biblical term, I believe.

I suppose you call your heterosexual relationship "carpet munching", because obviously, that's what your entire relationship is built around, and it's the only reason you're together. I don't call it either I see no reason to define the sexuality of my relationship - I am married. I don't care what you, GWB or anyone else says I am married to my husband of 17 years.
If you don't like it I will still manage to sleep tonight just fine!

Because heterosexuals engage in sodomy, too.
By the way, Sodom and Gomorrah were not destroyed due to homosexuality. Even Christ refers to the sins of Sodom as inhospitality to strangers.
What I've always wondered is why do we call homophobia "love" instead of bigotry? Why do we call homophobia "godly" instead of sinful? Why do we call homophobia "Christian" instead of immoral?
