My 10 year old cousin passed away on July 15,2007. I used some songs that he liked to listen to on a CD and DVD for our family. So I would recommend songs that your friend like as good songs not ones about some one passing away. But two songs that come to mind for me are Cotton Eye Joe and Forget about Me. The song at the end of the movie Breakfast Club.

Don't know if you like country music, but there is a great song by Vince Gill called "Go Rest High Upon That Mountain" and it is about someone close to you dying.
