I think it is. I also think it's a "control" issue, but also a rather shallow narcisstic issue as well.

I knew a girl who was anorexic and she was the meanest, most shallow human being alive. She really was.

Yet another good question by the Macster.
I don't think it's narcissism, but it's probably related in a way. I am no trained psychologist, and I admit to not having read up on anorexia, but both anorexia and narcissism seem to fall under the "obsessed with body image" category. But anorexia to me seems like it's the negative narcissism.
Maybe I'm going to read up on it.

'People are obessed with how they look are narcissts.' I don't think all vain people are narcissistic.
'I knew a girl who was anorexic and she was the meanest, most shallow human being alive. She really was.' and if you meet one businessman who is kind or mean they all are? one person does not represent the entire group.
'why is that women - and men, who are anorexics work aspire to be models or "beautiful"? Hmmmm....narcissts.' Narcissists think they are wonderful/beautiful/whatever and already think they can be models. people who have anorexia hate the way they look (which is one reason why they try to lose weight) so the are not narcissistic.

No because narcies don't have self-esteem problems. Most people given the narcy label usually have very good reason to be like that. They have the stature and history to prove it. Only when they think they're above the law and have a criminal history, for example, is it a problem. I do not believe that narcissism is a problem but created by those who are jealous and are sensitive. Just tell off a narcissist if it makes you feel good about yourself. He isn't going to care what you think and will probably laugh at you.
Anorexic people are more borderline-psychotic because they think they're fat when they're deathly skinny. That's a detachment from reality if I haven't seen one.
Tell an anorexic she or he's fat, and they will refuse to eat (don't actually tell them that though). Tell a Narcissist he's an ****** and he'll correct you with something else that's profane.

Narcissist think they are the hottest and best thing in the world. Anorexics hate themsevles and the way they look. So no, I'm afraid I disagree.
People who are obsessed with the way they look are called Histronic. Yes histronic personality is very evident with narcissists. However, narccisitst obsessed over how GOOD they think they look, whereas anorexics obsess over how TERRIBLE they look. That's a big difference.
Naccissist feel that they are perfect the way they are...anorexics don't. Clearly you have no done your research. Narcism comes from the Greek God Narcissus who loved himself and loved the way he looked. He thought he was the sexiest thing that ever was or ever will be.
I know my terminology I deal with things like this for a living. part of the treatment for anorexia is Cognitive therapy to help the ill learn to love themselves and see that they are beautiful the way they are.
They are vain...yes. Narcisstic...no. Do a little research from a credible source.

No. Narcissism implies self-love. Anorexia is a teenage mix of fear of womanhood/adulthood as a young woman grows, and the wish for self- definition / control by a temporary escape from a new and baffling environment full of attractive boys. God help them all

I think it's an acute form of narcissism and attention seeking that then gets genuinely out of control/ addictive although I expect you'll get a few who disagree with you (and me)
Ps. I'm Dr Watson, best mate of Sherlock Holmes - not a real doctor in case I get any comments regarding my uncaring nature etc etc
