If you have a window unit the smell may be from a dead critter, dead insects, or mold. Suggest removing it and cleaning the inside. If you are not up to task and need to hire it done, it might be cheaper to simply toss it (if it's a small unit) and buy another.

Your call. Good luck

Moisture most likely did cause mold to grow in either the vent, or the coils. However, just spraying it with a deoderizer won't do the trick, you have to kill the mold.

Check first to see if you have the same smell coming from other vents in the home... if not, then it is isolated to just the one duct. You can hire a duct cleaner to come out, and literally, steam clean the insides of the vents, and this will kill any mold growing in there. (This would take care of not only the mold, but all the "dust bunnies" too) Another option is to remove the duct - at this point, I would just replace it, but if cost is a factor, then you can use a 50/50 mix of bleach and water to kill the mold -- do this outside, or in a well ventilated area, and wear safety glasses/gloves. It IS bleach, and you can get a chemical burn, or mess your clothes up.

One other possible source - and not a pleasant thought -- something crawled into the open vent while you were working in the room and died in there. You can make a visual check for this by placing a small mirror with a bright flashlight into the duct.

Moisture buildup has created mold odor. Shut unit off and dry unit with hairdryer and spay with deodorizer.
