I'm also of native ancestry (Cherokee). My grandfather was "adopted" by a white Christian couple in order to leave the reservation in Oklahoma in 1895.
While racism is still a reality in today's world - and not just against people of color, but even whites are by people of color - it should not be tolerated by law enforcement or any government agency. Your brother should seek legal recourse against the arresting officer. Since hate crime has become incorporated into the legal system, he may as well go for the throat.

However, be very sure that your brother did not have a bench warrant or other pending issues with the law. That said, if the cop said what you say he said, it is a damning statement.

First of all -- there has to be a "charge" for any individual to be arrested -- even if it is nothing more than "suspicion" -- so, the "no reason" claim here has to be nothing more than a claim against what actually has happened !!
Next, Native Americans can no longer claim any exclusive rights to the noncaring and abusive behavior toward them by the "government" -- hell, they treat everyone like dirt !!

A good deal of the reasonings behind the failure of relations in the recent past between the government and the Native American -- had been formulated in the long history of deceptions and lies as well as the attitudes of mistrust and mismanagement that it was all built on to begin with !! Then, add to this -- the culture of dependency that was created within the tribal units that was allowed to be the accepted norm for so long !! Thank God a lot of that is beginning to come to an end and a good number of today's Native population is beginning to get a grip on living within the modern world with firm foundations within the tribal teachings of the past --- the "new age" Native American is not so easily pushed around --- they are savvy and wise in the law -- and a good number of them -- well founded financially !!

In closing here -- strange, but very true -- in survey after survey -- it has been found -- that, within prisons all over the nation -- at least 82% of prisoners therein -- say that they are innocent of the charges that have been brought against them !!

Yes they have apologized. I learned about it this year, I am not sure totally when. African Americans received an apology but from individual states and no not all of them. Some states didn't treat them badly. Native Americans did receive a formal apology. And I'm pretty sure they did for the Irish I can't recall though.

The government does seem to have an inexplicable preference for people born in other countries. They get to break the law with impunity.

Actually, there's a lot of the kind of harrassment you describe going on, not just among a given ethnicity. I mean, everyone I've ever talked to who was stopped, harassed or arrested by the cops was just grabbed up for NO reason.

Get over yourselves!!! I am tired of every minority saying they are picked on or targeted or why do the white people not like you? Guess what, we don't care about you that much either way to go out and arrest one of your own and cost the taxpayers money to feed him, house him, go to court, trial if that and sentence him just because of the color of his skin. I am a woman, should I get offended too if I am buying cocaine on the corner and a cop stops me? Guess what I broke the law, no matter what color, ethnicitiy, gender. Stand up for youselves, stop acting like victims of what happened hundred of years ago that you nor I were around to see or participate in.

somebody flush this. sounds like BS to me.

cops ALWAYS have a reason. Was he DRUNK in public? On probation? Not supposed to be there? Trespassing? did he throw something on the ground in front of the cop? (littering)
It could be something that small, or he's a suspect in something. Old ticket that turned into a bench warrant, happens A LOT. They just run your ID and it shows up, they arrest you. Simple as that. But without further info, sounds like BS. One cop doesn't speak for all, just like one SKIN doesn't speak for all.

edit: SEE there WAS a reason.

I do not believe that you are playing the race card. I do not know where you reside for a cop to have the nerve to say that "all red men look the same the judge will not know the difference".That is completely unprofessional, you should report him for making such a racist comment! Sad to say some people will never believe that racism exists unless it happens to them. Sorry for what happened to your brother, though.

There's far more to the story than what you're telling us, and you really need to provide more details if you don't want people to think you're lying. The cop must have accused and charged your brother with something if he arrested him, even if it was a completely phony charge. What happened after your brother was taken to the station and what does he have to say?

Police officers can be fired for misconduct. Years of failing to report this officer (or officers) is the reason they are still employed and harassing you.

Also, a single police precinct does not represent the government.

Uhhh, the government has historically been pretty lousy to Native Americans, as well as a lot of other groups, but the government also "does" arrest people for good reasons. Maybe he actually committed a crime.
