If you have to pay for some of your work to be published it is called 'vanity' publishing. I recommend you buy the Writers' and Artists' Yearbook (it's updated every year). This lists all the pushlishers (magazines, books etc), tells you what genre they accept and how to present it. I have found it very useful in the past and have NEVER paid for any of my work to be published.

There is no such thing as free publishing. Even those who claim to be free are not. There are many costs that you have to pay for.

Read about the so called FREE publishers here..

The first six articles tell the story... Self publishers get a lot of kids really excited about free publishing and they sign up, only to be hit with charges their parents have pay later on. They are very hard sell people who pressure the heck out of you once they get your name and know you are a kid.

Be very careful. As for why you don't want to be paid for your work. Why not? You could go the traditional publishing route. Even with traditional publising there are still expenses though. Most authors require their books edited before shopping them around. That costs money. And once it is published, most authors use their first advance check to hire a marketing firm to promote the book so it sells well.

I have many great Q and A on publishing starred on my profile. Print them out and study them. There is a lot of great info there. Pax - C

The following information is useful for those requesting information on where students might send their writing. Below are links to NCTE positions, guidelines, resolutions, books, articles, and other resources to support the creativity of student writers--most of the resources can be found right here on our Web site--and some may take you to other locations on the World Wide Web.

You can only be self-published at your age, I'm sorry. I tried getting an agent when I was thirteen and they didn't look at me twice. But www.cafepress.com (click on shop the marketplace and scroll down until you see a book on the bottom left. click that). You'll have to get a copyright and ISBNs, though, and they are not cheap. You have to have both of these for your writings.

There is only one possible way. Write your story and convert it to a PDF file. Thats as published as you are going to get. Just an electronic file. You can send it out on the internet to your friends and whatever and you can print it up yourself. As for having it published to look like a real book, nobody will do that for you for free. Paper costs money, book covers cost money, ISBN numbers cost money, and peoples time cost money.

There is another way you can get published for like 30 bucks. Enter one of those "free" short story contests and they send you a letter later on saying "they liked your story" and if you want to guarantee it to be published in thier book of short stories, you have to pre-order their book. (basically everyone that pre-orders the book gets in and then they make their money by selling the book to everyone that submitted a short story.) Usually they sell 5 or more books to each writer so those writers can give them out to their friends. They usually sell you the books for 30 or 40 dollars each. Google "Short story contest" and some stuff should pop up.

Do take care though. I have had two short-story's published in a mag in SA. The pay was not much but i was so proud, this was years ago. Then i tried my hand at kiddies-stories , sent one in to a mag and it was rejected just to appear in the mag about a year later. I was not impressed. Maybe you can send your stories if they are short one's to magazine's etc. I wish you well and take care.:))
