Well, even if you really are the wrost at conversions, at least you're not the worst! Anyway, you can get better by trying to memorize the sequence of prefixes, and then using that to figure out what each one means.
For instance, going from large to small: no prefix (1 unit), deci- (1/10), centi (1/100), milli- (1/1,000), micro- (1/1,000,000), nano- (1/1,000,000,000), pico- (1/1,000,000,000,000), then femto- and on down. It looks nastier than it is: look at milli-, micro- and etc.; each next level is 1/1,000 of the one before, right? Keep them in order and you're home free.
Now, going up: no prefix (1 unit), deca- (10X), hecto (100X), kilo- (1,000X), mega- (1,000,000X), giga- (1,000,000,000X), and tera- on up. Again, after the 1,000X (kilo-), each one is 1,000X more than the one before.
So, going down is deci, centi, milli, micro, nano, pico (and the last two don't come up too often in normal conversation); going up is Deca, Hecto, Kilo, Mega, Giga, Tera (and unless you mess with computers, the last two of these are probably not going to come up at parties). Once you've got that down, actually doing the converting is a snap! Before you know it, you'll be amazing your friends by doing conversions in your head, and when they stand there stunned and open-mouthed, you can look down modestly and say "Oh, it's no big deal - I've always been able to do this, can't everybody?"
