well actually- to find the mass of an object, u dont weigh it. that finds the "weight" but ur looking for the mass. it sounds stupid, but yu would "mass" it instead using athree beam balance.

If the object is on earth and you could measure its weight on a scale then weigh it in Newtons or Pounds. Since the force of gravity ( Fg) is mass ( m) x gravity( g) which
(Fg) = Weight , then weight / gravity is the mass. When using g = 9.8 m/s^2 the weight is in Newtons and the Mass is in kilograms. When using g= 32 ft/sec^2 the Mass is Slugs and the Weight is in Pounds

There are three kinds of masses:

inertial m, the one in equation F=ma
passive gravitaitional μ as in weight=μg, and
active gravitational M, the one in g(R) = GM/R².

All three can be measured separately:

m by comparison of accelerations when mass m interacts with etalon mass 1kg, as Sir. Isaac Newton proposed.

μ by measuring enlongation of spring under weight of the mass, as Norrie proposed

M by comparing orbital periods of test particles orbiting around mass M and 1kg, as Prof. Zikzak proposed.


All three masses are believed to be equal m = μ = M.
The fact that m = μ is the foundation of general relativity, and therefore is the most reliable. Evidence supporting that M=μ is much less robust.

We weight mass in Newtons.
After we know how many newtons the object weights the mass can be determined by dividing the calculated acceleration at that point of measurement on Earth. Scales automatically measure the object not in terms of newton but in terns of mass(kilograms). So we can actually measure mass on a scale.

Weigh it. (in pounds, ounces, grams, kilograms....etc).
