A normally tuned guitar will play in concert pitch - that is C major. An Eb sax plays in Eb, which is a minor third higher than C. This means that in order to play at the same pitch as the guitar, the sax has to play a minor third LOWER. If someone was 3 feet taller than someone else, they'd have to stand in a 3 foot hole to be the same height as them.

Therefore when you play in A the sax will be playing in F# (6 sharps). When you play in D the sax will be playing in B (5 sharps)
