Busses are always cheaper than trains in the US. Between cities in the northeast there are Chinatown Busses, that go from chinatown to chinatown for very little. For example, between DC and New York, the Chinatown Bus is $20 each way, and $35 Round Trip, the regular (Greyhound) bus is $37 each way and the train runs between $85 and $120 each way, depending on whether you are doing the regional train or the Acela fast train.

you really would have to check both out with the specific cities you need to go to/from otherwise your question really cannot be answered.
Generally speaking, bus will be cheaper, but that is not always true. you could hit a sale or perhaps the trains are more frequent than buses and thus a lower cost.
