Do you have a SAG agreement? Go to SAG.org for more info on that.
You advertise on backstage.com or actorsaccess.com, you specify that pay is deferred, and make sure your contracts specify under what circumstances actors will get paid.
good luck

You're totally not out of line. Free work is common and acceptable. Usually, though, it comes with at least copy and credit (name in the credits, free copy of finished product). You dont say where you are though, so its a little difficult to know what kind of means you have available to you. You might look online to see if anyone hosts a community theatre/ independent film audition website. for example, the RI, MA, CT area has netheatre411.com on which is is common to post and look for non-paying or stipend only work.
Also, keep your eye open for any local arts friendly newpapers circulating in the area. Often, you find auditions in these, and I'm sure you could post an ad about what you're looking for with relatively little cost to you.
Last, if you are looking for younger actors you might try putting up flyers at a nearby college with a film or theatre program. Like the other places, be as specific as you can about what your project is and who you're looking for (as well as stating you are copy/credit only or what have you).

Sounds like that Steve Martin movie Ha! Where he sneaks up on Eddy Murphy,( Bow Finger) and lets the weird crew he's conned into acting for free; think it's part of the skit to be sneaking around and chasing the "Star", who didn't have a clue, as he was not hired--but stalked and used by the "producer" Steve Martin, until he thought he was hallucinating and going nut's, needed a Psychiatrist! Very funny movie Ha! Good Luck!

i would try advertising where you live. if this is independant you will probably be able to hold auditions, too. but you should definitely to some asking around on filmmaking sights, see what other filmmakers do, and do plently of advertising where you plan to do the auditions.

Try a psych hospital, because only the retarded and mentally ill people will work for free while you keep all of the money.
