I find them a lot more comfortable than full length trousers. Also as a uni student, I find most lecture theatres very warm, and my housemates insist on keeping the house quite warm (minimum 65F). I live in Southern Britain, and do I'm talking fairly mild winters (Gulf stream, etc, etc.)

Not at all - you do what you're comfy in.
In the town where I live, (in S.E.England) the postmen have been wearing shorts all year around for years. It started as a bet and they've never stopped. In all winds & weathers, there they are, with their little blue knees. Bless them!

Update : Am I missing something here? At least 4 of the above answered as though you are a female???

Some stupid jerk boys might laugh but you really dont have to worrry about that. Just wear what makes you comfortable. I have some friends that wear hoodies and shorts in the winter. I really dont think there is anything wrong with it. It also depends on your body temp, like whether your cold natured or hot. Im sure nobody will laugh at you they might question you or wonder why you are wearing shorts but its not really any of thier business what your wearing.Go for it !

Sometimes in protocol terms we shall not wear whatever we feel like because of respect and solemnity. I'll always remember these college guys in the most traditional university in my country that where all the time with almost hippie look for their hairs and clothes= jeans, t-shirts, yes shorts and you name it on how colorful those blase and casual ones would be. But when exams come they would cut really short hair, wear suits with ties so that even we would have to look twice to recon!
On the what people think I wouldn't waste a minute

Wear whatever the heck you want. If you feel comfortable then by all means, wear your shorts. If anyone laughs, just pretend you don't know what the heck is funny. Is their problem. I live in Wisconsin in US. It gets way below 0 here and there is always someone who will wear shorts all winter. So, hey, go for it.

Guys and girls alike wear shorts in winter. Look at some of these daft girls you see wandering around scantily clad in the freezing cold after a night out! Ridiculous I think. Just wear what feels comfortable without freezing.

I wear my shorts and birkenstocks all year long, if it gets cold I switch to my birk clogs and that about it, i don't typically wear pants unless its for work or a formal event. I live at the beach so it rarely snows so i can get away with shorts for most of the year.

People may giggle a little to themselves, but dont let it bother you. As long as when it gets near Christmas put a bit of tinsel around the hem just to get into the spirit of it.

If you want to wear them then do. We always seem to bother what other people think but what does it matter as long as your doing no harm. Enjoy wearing your shorts and don't care who laughs they are just showing their ignorance.

No. But stay away from pairing it up with a tube top. And also stay away from Dazy Dukes.
Go for the knee-lenth short or cropped pants.
