I think everyone is different. All my friends had their babies late except one. I had mine almost three weeks early with no complications.

My son was 5 days late and probably would have been later except I went in for my weekly check-up and my doctor was on call that day and just decided to keep me and induce me. I was really hoping he would say that so I had packed my bag just in case! I was started on Pitocin (sp?) to get my contractions going around 11:30am. At 4pm I was dilated to about 3 so doctor went ahead and broke my water. A little before 8 I was checked again and was then dilated to 5 and having 30 second long contractions every 60 seconds. I then decided on an epidural and they came in to do that and then at 11pm I was fully dilated...pushed 3 times and Gabriel was out! It was the most awesome experience I've ever had! I'm now almost 11 weeks with #2. Congratulations to you and I hope everything goes well!

It seems like late/early runs in families... My mother had both my sister and a week late (finally delivered C-section for both) and my sister's 2 little ones were at least 3 days late (both were finally induced) and my daughter was a week late (and was taken by c-section b/c she just wouldn't come with induction).
On the other side, my friend has 2 sisters (1 with 2 kids) and all the babies in her family were born several weeks (3-5) early.
So that's my experience... For your sake, I hope you deliver a little early instead of a week late... those past due days are killer!!!
Good luck!

My son was my first, and he came early at 37 weeks 6 days. My water had a large leak and they induced me with Pitocin because contractions were not starting on their own.
I have no personally had experience with the gel they use, btu I know a few gals who needed that. Both of them went in not dialted at all, and with the gel and Pitocin, their babies were born within 12 hours total (form start to end).
Good luck.

my first baby was late. i've heard that the first ones usually come late but i don't know the actual statistics for that to tell you if thats true or not. i did end up being induced with my first at 41 weeks because she was a large baby and i was making absolutely no progress what so ever with her. the gel they use isn't bad, it just helps to ripen the cervix. the thing that kicked my a$$ was the pitocin because it really gets the contractions going. good luck to you and i hope everything goes well for you!

My first child was born 8 weeks early. I have not had any experience with the gel. I went on my own both times.

i was induced ... friday at 8.30am....... baby arrived sunday 11.36 by c section however, she was spine on spine! and stuck... but what ever happens it is all good as long as they get here eventually!I was just hungry the first day (friday) as the gel was slow to work i needed no pain relief until saturday at 5pm gas and air to break my water with then nothing till 9pm i had pethadine ( the drip they put you on to speed things up if you need it can make the contractions seem worse as you get less build up) i then gave in and had an epidural that night as the contractions came back to back... then i slept all night pushed in the moring failed and had a c section..... ta da! to be honest it is all a blur and no way near as bad as itsounds we where laughing and joking most the time...... the only bad bit was i felt starved a little frightened as i did not know what to expect and a bit peed off that i couldn't do it all naturally ( they wouldn't let me eat after breakfast saturday...Mean! lol

Mine was early, by about 2 weeks. I do know that how you have your first is usually how you have your second. As for the induction question, I have had a pitocin drip with my first when labor wasn't progressing and my water broken with my second. I have been told it can make labor more intense.
