About two decades ago it became faddish to birth a baby in a warm birthing pool. Children were also taken into pools as young as a month and swam with there mothers. Babies naturally hold their breath, paddle and kick, and have no natural fear of water.

Apparently they can but they do have to be submerged under water practically as soon as they are born.

I once watched a documentary where a woman gave birth in a birthing pool and within minutes they submerged the baby - babba wasn't traumatised as the surrounding weren't that different from being in the womb.

Babies also, instinctively, hold their breath and paddle and kick out - the method in the madness is that exposure to this whilst very, very young means they won't have any fears when plunged under water again!?!?!? If you leave it any more than just a few days then they "lose" the natural instinct!!!

Very interesting but it was quite funny to see them practically swimming - interestingly, all the babies made their way upwards towards the surface and came out quite okay - non were crying or spluttering, etc.

Weird but quite cool - and not something I would try.

As funny as it sounds, it's true. My uncle taught my cousin to swim when she was 6 months!! when she got older, she joined a swim team and was very successful in that.

I've heard that is true. I even used to know a woman who taught babies to swim that were less than a year old.

I, too, have a cousin that learned to swim before her 1st birthday. Of course, supervision is required.
