My neighbor has a husband in El salvador and she recently married another guy here in the US. Isn't this illegal? Even if it's two different countries?

Yes. Case in point. Arab men. There are many (NOT ALL) who have a wife is UAE and a wife in the US.

If I understand correctly, and I may very well be wrong, so don't quote me in your text book, but if you marry someone outside the US, even if you are both US citizens, you have to apply to have that marriage recognized as legal and binding in the US. You may even have to have apply for a marriage license and go through a Justice of Peace marriage here at some point before or after your foreign marriage.

If she was legally married to the guy in El Salvador, then her 2nd marriage, in the US, isn't valid (because she was already married).

Yes, it's called bigamy. Marriage is recognized in all countries, so if you're married in Europe, you are still married if you travel to the united states and vice versa

I would think so but I am not sure. I'll bet it happens more than you would think with immigration laws. If some one marries a US citizen they can stay in the country.

I don't believe that U.S. recognizes the marriage in El Salvador, however I doubt the church would be very happy about the situation.

Marriage and divorce are recognized by all countries. If you are married in one it is recognized as a marriage in all. It would be illegal in the U.S.

Even if it isn't illegal, it is immoral.

When you get married in the US, you sign a piece of paper indicating that you are not legally married to another person. if that turns out to be untrue, your US marriage is nullified.

Yes it makes her second marriage void. Would not hold up in court.
