A dehumidifier will keep it from coming back. To get rid of it? First: do you have a sump pump, drains, or any other source of standing water? Pour some lemon or pine scented cleaner down them to kill the foulness. Bleach will work if that's all you have. Flush them with hot water and repeat occasionally. Next, to get the musty smell out of there, get a bucket of hot water and some lemon or pine cleaner, and scrub, top to bottom. Floor, walls, ceiling if possible! If the basement has windows or doors leading outside, give them a cleaning then leave open all day on a hot sunny day to air it out. That's the sure-fire way to make it smell summer-time fresh!

First I would recommend opening the door, and putting a fan moving the old air out. Then I would put a humidifier in in to put some fresh oxygen back in. With a dusty smell their is a lot of dust that needs to be cleaned so I would suggest that you take either beach and water or vinegar and water and wash all stored things in your basement. I would clean the wood (cabinets) with olive oil and lemon concentrate, the floors with vinegar and water, and even give the ceiling a good dusting. I would also suggest washing the walls with soap and water. If your paint comes off from the scrub try painting the basement with a water proof basement paint.
I wish you the best of luck on this project.

There is a product that acts as a damp chaser, it is a can you open and allow to sit and absorb the dampness and odor in any area. 1 does a closet, 4 to 6 for a basemant, I would say. At Walmart, etc.
