If you are harvvesting for the seeds you will have to allow them to mature. If your growing season is long enough you will begin to see the seeds in the middle of the blossom where the yellow stuff is now. I just remove the brown leaves and make sure they have plenty of water.

i like to place the sunflower heads out on a table on the deck. it incredibly is neat watching the chickadees and nuthatchers having a banquet no extra advantageous than 6 ft away outdoors the patio door (have been given some great photos too). The chickadees take one seed at a time, making many journeys to shop each and each seed; exciting to computer screen. they seem to be a seasonal flower - lifeless heading won't sell new flora, yet ought to help alongside a plant that has multiple flora.

Cut the heads off leaving about 10 inches stem for a "handle" and put them in a shady, dry area to finish drying. I'd hang mine in mesh bags in the garage until completely dry. Then taking a head in each hand, rub the heads together and the seeds come out..........our just pick the seeds out with your fingers.

Tie a brown paper bag around the flower head and leave them till the seeds fall out into the bag. (hope it doesn't rain)

As long as you have been watering them, sounds like they have run their course...time to harvest the seeds, dry for next year.

Agree with all of above, but leave some for birds. They will love them.
