If the US is a democracy, then why do we have both democrats and republicans as the main parties? And why was the US referred to as a republic in the Pledge of Allegiance?

I just looked this up: According to the CIA - The World Factbook, the US goverment type is constitution-based federal republic; strong democratic tradition. So we are a republic with a lot of democratic influence. So I guess the democrats want to turn the country into a democracy and the republicans want to keep it as a republic with less democratic influence.

I should have just looked this up myself, but wanted a layman's answer. Anyway, here is one explanation: http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=3388. It's obviously republican biased, but I get the point.
