A guide to recognizing your saints is a good one. I'm pretty sure that was New York.. but haven't watched it since it came out on dvd.. It might be Chicago..but .. I really can't remember...

Brighton Beach Memoirs and Lost in Yonkers are both really good growing up/coming of age movies. I can't think of any others...sorry!

what about an american tale? haha, a cartoon but heavily focussed on new york.
for a more serious, adult movie: Kids.
