As far as I am aware McCann is a Catholic name and I'm not just saying that because of Madeline McCann and co.

Is 99% of the Catholics in England decended from Irish emigrants? What Catholic family names are there in England.

If you think about it prior to the reformation everybody was a Catholic.

The Duke of Norfolk has the names Fitzalan- Howard, and the family are traditionally Catholic

I doubt if you could ever tell from an English surname whether they were Catholic or not. You could have Catholic and Protestant Smiths Browns and Robinsons

Added to which a lot of Scots were Catholic and their surnames turn o in England.

If you want more complications Irish surnames turn up as both Catholic and Protestant

All English family names dating from before 1500 are traditional Catholic names.
