How many of you consider yourselves suffering from depression or/and anxiety? (It doesn't have to have been clinically diagnosed)

I'm curious how many women also seek treatment, as opposed to regarding it as something they have to deal with on their own.
Thanks :)

Aml: I agree with you about the general view of women overreacting and being too emotional when bringing depression into attention.

I have suffered from depression and anxiety attacks since the age of 17 or so. I have been clinically diagnosed and have seen a counselor. But I have not yet tried any medication, maybe if it ever gets really really bad. For the time being I can control it by eating healthy, exercising, meditating and the like. I do think there is still a stigma surrounding these problems, especially for women. Some women still get accused of overreacting or being too emotional when they truly have a problem.

I was first diagnosed with clinical depression at the age of 16. I've dealt with this condition on and off for years. I manage without it quite well without medication. My mother has also been diagnosed with depression. I believe one of my children struggles with this as well. There may well be a genetic factor.
I've also (in the past) been diagnosed with panic attacks and post traumatic stress disorder. Both of which are ancient history now that I've been out of an abusive relationship for quite some time. These conditions I believe were the result of my past environment. They disappeared completely after removing myself from the abusive situation.

I am suffering from both. I was diagnosed about 2 years ago when I was 13. I have felt suicidal since I was about 7 but I didn't really know how to end my life. I am taking medication for depression but it is supposed to treat anxiety too. I don't really believe I have depression, I actually believe I am bi-polar, but that is up for my psychiatrist to decide.

I am not.
But my sister and mother were both diagnosed with depression at one time. They were on meds, the whole deal.
Now, they both have been diagnosed with a different (and seperate) disorder. It is obvious that the treatments now are the correct ones.
I think depression is said to be a problem too often. It's the easiest thing to say. You're sad? Mood swings? Oh, it's depression.

I have suffered from depression on and off for years, since I was about 13. Because of that when I had my son I was more at risk of having post natal depression, and true to form I did, I'm still on medication!! I used to suffere badly with panic attacks and now when I'm nervous I get extremely anxious and then start to feel that panic but now I can control it, I don't think anxiety and depression are the same things!! But this is MY opinion from MY own experiences. Hope that helps :D

I have been clinically diagnosed as situationally and chronically depressed, and have been symptomatic since my early teens. I've taken meds, been through therapy, etc, but it tends to ebb and flow. I agree with one of the other posters though, that it's sometimes too easy to label someone that way if they are just having a bad week. It almost negates the reality of depression as an illness.

Hi Lioness :)
Yes, I was diagnosed with post-natal depression after the birth of my first child nearly 10 years ago.(depression also runs in both sides of my family)
Because there was a long delay in being treated(saw many doctors, but no-one believed me until I went to hospital because of high risk of suicide), I am on antidepressants for life now.

Women are more than twice as likely to suffer from depression and anxiety disorders than men.

I wonder if a lot of women on G&WS suffer from depression & anxiety disorder? They seem to have a lot of anger and bitterness towards the men on here.

I am currently on Prozac since I began using Interferon (a cancer treatment) that has been linked to depression and suicide. It has helped.
