Multiply by 28,
28W + 21 = -20
W = -41/28

Remember:

* do the same to both sides
* get the variable on its own

So
W + 3/4 = -5/7
subtract 3/4 from both sides

W = -5/7 - 3/4
Now, you could plug -5/7 - 3/4 into a calculator or solve it by multiplying top and bottom of each fraction by the same thing.

-5×4/7×4 - 3×7/4×7 = -20/28 - 21/28 = -41/28

W = -41/28 = -1.464...

W + 3/4 = -5/7

First make a common denominator of 4*7, which is 28:
28W/28 + (7/7)(3/4) = (4/4)(-5/7)
28W/28 + 21/28 = -20/28

Multiply both sides by 28 to get rid of the fractions:
28W + 21 = -20

Subtract 21 from both sides:
28W + 21 - 21 = -20 - 21
28W = -41
W = -41/28

Check your answer:
(-41/28) + 3/4 = -5/7
(-41/28) + (21/28) = -5/7
-20/28 = -5/7
-5/7 = -5/7

W+3/4 = -5/7

W = -5/7 - 3/4 = -20/28 -21/28= -41/28

W + 3/4 = -5/7

1) You want to get 'W' by itself
2) Subtract 3/4 from both sides of the equation.
3) So you now have: W = -5/7 - 3/4
4) Solve for 'W'

Multiply by the lowest common denominator, which is 28

28W + 21 = -20
28W = -41
W= -41/28

randy:

subtract 3/4 from both sides and you're done.

w = -5/7 minus 3/4

if you can do that then your problem is not algebra but rather is fractions.
