"The direction of motion is caused by the Coriolis effect. This can be visualized if you imagine putting a pan of water on a turntable and then spinning the turntable in a counterclockwise direction, the direction in which the earth rotates as seen from above the north pole. The water on the bottom of the pan will be dragged counterclockwise direction slightly faster than the water at the surface, giving the water an apparent clockwise spin in the pan. But if you were to look at the water in the pan from below, corresponding to seeing it from the south pole, it would appear to be spinning in a counterclockwise direction. Likewise, the rotation of the earth gives rise to an effect that tends to accelerate draining water in a clockwise direction in the Northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern."

No dude. The water is going down the drain in regardless of course you deliver it. maximum loos have an outlet that spins the water in a undeniable course. Ie. that is positioned on one area of the bowl. If that is on the suitable area of the bowl, and it sends the water counterclockwise interior the Northern hemisphere, the action of the draining water does no longer be reversed by using shifting the same bathroom to the southern hemisphere. This clarification (as certainly one of those great style of different's do) demands a short qualification. there is an infinitely small impact exerted on the water by using no longer basically the spin of the earth, yet additionally the moons place (and the solar's place, and the placement or your nuts). interior the same way those impacts can no longer conquer the preliminary spinning of the water, in case you need to do away with all different impacts (vibrations, make the water honestly nonetheless, do no longer set in in action in any respect), and u had sufficient time (consistent with risk a million 3 hundred and sixty 5 days), and a correct sufficient measuring gadget (say... God?), then definite, the water could spin opposite from North to South hemisphere. yet.. in basic terms stay at school.

The Corriolis force due to the rotation of the Earth does make weather systems spin one way in the northern hemisphere and the other way in the southern. Theoretically, this applies to water going down a drain too. But this effect would be much too small to see unless you did a precise experiment in a lab.

No. That's a myth.

The Earth is a sphere, so with gravity acting inward towards the center, it behave the same way all over the sphere.

I had people claim they witnessed this but I didn't when I was in Australia!

Go to Australia and see for yourself - it's a wonderful place to visit!

I'm from NYC.

Not much - I think the water in both places is comprised of two parts "H" to one part "O"
