The rags-to-riches paradigm (which was not a myth at all since there are verifiable examples of it documented) simply requires a different mindset than is prevalent today. All of the mid-to-early 20th century r-to-r stories you hear about are based on hard work, sacrifice and OCD-like drive to succeed.

Modern r-to-r stories are (more often than not) based on winning the lottery, getting a nike-commercial deal, or having a hiterto unknown Aunt leave you a truckload of cash.

We have lost the key element from the story: WORK HARD, SAVE MONEY, MAKE PERSONAL SACRIFICES.

It's like the way that we approach weight loss. We are always looking for the "Best diet", the "right pill", the "easy way to lose weight". When in reality, we should be focused on: EAT LESS, AND EXERCISE.

Same problem, different effect. We lost some of our work ethic in the last 1/2 century.

Well, it wasn't a myth at one time. If you worked hard, saved your money you would become successful having nothing to start with. Times have changed, however, and the current generation is going in the other direction. Does this help?

Way too much. That is why they let the rich walk all over them. They imagine that someday they will be rich, too.
