but add letters 'a' to 'z' as well as 'A' to 'Z' and '0' to '9'. It is general computer terminology coming from the combination of two words alphabetical and numerical characters. It is usually referred to as alphanumeric.

An "alpha numeric character" is a symbol using either your written alphabet and/or the numbers 0 - 9. This typically excludes using ?/.>,<=+]{'"%^&*#@!$, etc. unless you're swearing... grinnnnn
