If this was after a power failure, it may be the router settings were not saved correctly when installed, it can then lose it's settings on power down. In this case you may need to re-configure it. Out of interest, have you re-started the laptop since then? Some people never turn theirs off.

I suspect you have a modem connected to a router and the router interfaces with your LAN. I do not know if it is wired or wireless. If wireless and you need to check out the router settings you must use a wired link to the router. I assume that the router provides LAN ip addresses via DHCP.

If you have a DNS problem it can be either between the pc and the Router OR the router and the Internet.

First, go to your lap top. Go to My network places. Right click on your LAN connection (wired or wireless whichever you are using) and select proerties from the drop down menu. From the window that pops up, highlight Internet connection (TCP/IP) and click on properties. On the pop up window make sure you have the button on Obtain an IP address automatically AND the button on Obtain a DNS automatically. Both must selected.

If the router does not provide LAN IP addresses via DHCP you must enter the static LAN IP address, default gateway, subnet mask AND the DNS (which in you case is the router default gateway). This is done in the same window.

Once you have set this, close out and follow all prompts; you may need to reboot pc. Now open command prompt (start, run - type in cmd and hit enter). In command prompt, type in "ipconfig /all" without the quotes and hit enter. You should see the IP address for all live LAN connections. Note them and write them down. Now in command prompt type in "ping " without the quotes and where is the default gateway IP address (e.g. ping 192.168.1.1). Hit enter. You should get 4 positive responses showning a link to the router. Now enter "ping 4.2.2.2" and hit enter. You should get 4 positive responses showing that you are successful pinging an Internet server. Now in command prompt type in "ping yahoo.com". If you receive 4 positive replies your DNS is now working. If you receive 0 positive replies the DNS problem remains.

If DNS problem remains, go to the router (via wired connection) and check the config at the router. Check the LAN config page, it should be set to send out LAN IP via DHCP and DNS the same way (unless you have a static LAN IP assignment which you probably do not). Now go to the WAN config page on the router. It should be set for a dynamic IP address from the ISP (unless you have a static ip) and it should assign DNS via static as well. If you have a

reset the router again if that doesn't work try using a static DNS in your tcp/ip settings and also let your ISP know.

If your router plugs in to a DSL or cable modem, unplug it and plug your PC directly in to the modem then run IPCONFIG /ALL from a command line and see if you get a DNS server then verify it works

And how did you manage to post this question :)
Any way lets assume you really have such problem.
There are many reasons that could lead to such error message! The first and easiest thing you should do is:
1. Power off your router
2. Power off you computer
3. Power on your router
4. Power on your computer
And may the force be with you
