I have a SBC Siemens Speedstream 4100 DSL Modem and a linksys befsx41 router and need to configure it to connect to SBC Yahoo. The DSL modem it setup to do PPOE so what do I select in the linksys setup software for internet connection type. Do I select PPOE there also or do I select Obtain an IP automatically (DHCP). Should only one part of the connection handle the PPOE ? Should the modem handle the PPOE or the router ? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure that specific model of router supports PPPoE. If it does not, perhaps a firmware upgrade from the maker's web site is needed.

Anyway, when you configure the WAN port, you have several choices. One is Dynamic IP (sometimes called DHCP or Obtain an IP automatically); one is Static IP (and it will then ask for the static IP, default gateway, subnet mask and DNS servers), and one is PPPoE (and it will ask for user name and password for PPPoE).

If the WAN port configuration of your router has choices like Dynamic IP and Static IP but not PPPoE then that router's version of firmware does not support PPPoE. What upsets me is that several low end router makers indicated PPPoE ability in their spec sheets but actually they do not. Often, however, a newer firmware version will support PPPoE. This assumes there is a newer firmware.

Firmware upgrade is not hard to do, just follow the directions on the web site. Most no longer require a TFTP server software so it is very easy if firmware upgrade is needed.

Please understand that if PPPoE is not an option and no firmware upgrade provides the option, the router will NOT support it and you need a different one.

normally your leave your modem and have it configured for PPPOE then plug your router into the modem and should work with the default settings
