This is the wrong time of year to get a mantis as a pet - they only live the one season and it's near the end of its life cycle.

However, Mantis do make excellent - if short lived - pets. They are excellent at the art of stealth and camouflage. Look in bushes, especially gardens where bugs might be.

But consider doing this next spring - look in seed catalogs under pest control. Often times you can purchase mantis egg cases to hang in your garden etc. These cases will hatch anywhere from a few - say 20 - to over a hundred baby mantis. Select the few you wish to keep for the summer and turn the rest loose in your garden or back yard.

Mantis are not social creatures. In fact they're cannibalistic. so you'll need a separate environment for each mantis.

Yeah. Consider the egg case thing next spring.

A praying mantis is protected by law. You can order an egg case of them from Burpee's Catalog to be released into your garden to control other pests. Why would anyone want one for a pet??? Their life span is very short. Get yourself an ant farm.

Mantids are protected by law and illegal to own in most states. They are extremely important to your local ecology because of all the pest control they provide. If you want a weird big bug for a pet, ask your local pet store to order you a giant millipede or a pair of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. These make interesting terrarium inhabitants.

what the person above me said is untrue that is just a belief some people had if it was an endangered species you probably couldnt buy egg cases same for if it was illegal to have one as a pet.
