Who are the top 3 defensive shortstops right now? I'd like something based on facts, not just on who you like.

BDough - Jeter actually ranks second-last in zone factor, and near the bottom in range factor. He's pretty awful on balls hit to his right.

percentage wise it is Vizquel, Towolizki and Reyes but that does not figure in what range someone has, that is just saying that the balls they get to they field better than the guys who can get to more balls. I think all three are at the top but I would also put Cabrera up there for his range and gets to balls that a lot of guys would not. Eckstein has the range but not the arm to complete the play so he falls on the list, Guillen in Detroit is a decent SS but known more for his bat so I push him down the list. Renteria is Atlanta and Rollins in Philadelphia get to balls they should not but do not make some of the routine throws that they should.
Edit: I did not research enough first time!
My three would still be Vizquel, Towolski and Reyes.
Edit Again: Craig S, your stats are off according to the links below....Jeter is 12th in the league in Range Factor for SS and 11th for Zone Range...that is no where near the bottom, more towards average, which still leaves him out of the top three.

According to the Hardball Times version of zone rating, it's Vizquel, Reyes, and Everett, among the guys who have played a lot. However, McDonald and Tulowitzki have made a lot more plays on balls out of their zone than Vizquel and Reyes, so I'd go with Everett, McDonald and Tulowitzki

Ozzie Smith- what's there to declare? he's the Wizard of oz, thirteen Gold Gloves, backflips... Rey Ordonez- A testomony to his fielding skill became his quantity of enjoying time inspite of his anemic offensive skill. He became an fundamental area of that Mets infield interior the late 90s with John Olereud, Robin Ventura and Edgardo Alfonzo that many call the suited of all time. Omar Vizquel- basically guy or woman with greater Gold Gloves became the Wiz himself Luis Apricio- 11 Gold Gloves, whilst he retired he became the all-time chief in assits and double performs, and the all-time AL chief in putouts and entire possibilities. Cal Ripken Jr.- The Iron guy, in basic terms the epitome of reliable and relentless.

I would say Jose Reyes, Orlando Cabrera and Jimmy Rollins are the best. But because you asked based on facts i have to leave my favorite Yuniesky Betancourt out because he has 22 errors.
