I noticed last night one of my son's bottle smells AWFUL! I washed it twice and let it soak before a third washing, but the smell is still there. I think I heard once before of someone using a bleach/water mix to get rid of odors, but I can't find anything to support that. Can I do that or is there some other way of getting odors out? Any help is appreciated.

You can use a bleach solution to sterilize. Use a tablespoon of bleach per 8 cups of water and allow the bottle to soak for an hour or two. You can weigh down the bottles in the solution by setting a plate on top.

Make sure that you thoroughly wash the bottles with soap and hot water afterwards or send them through the dishwasher. You can always boil them as well.

Edit: Hello people, how do you think people sterilized before dishwashers? Boiling and bleach. There's NOTHING wrong with sterilizing with bleach as long as you clean items throughly afterwards. Half of the dish detergents you are using have bleach in them. Now, if you sterilize with bleach and don't wash them afterwards, that would be stupid and harmful, but I'm assuming you'd be smart.

This happened to one of my daughter's bottles (Dr. Browns). After the second washing I discovered some unholy mold growing in a section of the anti-colic insert. It went straight into the bin!

Otherwise, I've found that boiling does help to get rid of curdled milk odors. Would stay away from bleach though.

Throw the bottle away. There is no getting the smell out that I have found. I have 2 little ones (1&2). I have never found anything that will get odor out of a bottle once it has set into the plastic.

It is important to clean the bottles as soon as baby is done with it...I would suggest that you throw the bottle out and get a new one to prevent any potential infections. Every night it might help to sterilize the bottle and the nipple. there is no standardized method to clean bottles with bleach. Please buy new bottles.

Just trash it! Plastic bottles absorb smells, and also when the plastic starts to wear down (look foggy or discolored) they may start to leak the dyes and other chemicals used to make the bottles into the liquid! You should get rid of old bottles and buy new ones often.

Try lemon juice, it cleans anything. If you use bleach, just put a little, with some soap and fill the rest with water and let it sit. I would be afraid to use too much, it could be harmful. Good luck! : )

Maybe try putting some baking soda in there with just a little water and shake it up...let it set.
