it just means one ov your contacts has signed in
its like a im here now hello sign lol thats what i call it

lol hunny you can't do that. When you sign on msn, the sign in pop up is seen by your contacts, but not yourself, and you will see other contacts sign on, but not yourself, unless, you can be on 2 messengers at the same time.. (not the old messenger)

well I am not exactly sure what you want but probably you can try this, go to tools>options and the first option should be Personal. Now in display name box you can put smiley shortcuts with your name like (6), :S or something

This simply means that a new person has joined in the discussion, and that is there username you are seeing.
