ok, two days ago while driving my check engine soon light came on. the car drives normal by the way. so i brought it today to get it hooked up to the obm meter and says that an oxygen sensor is malfunctioning. i drove home and ate. i left again to stop at autozone to price these sensors and the light didnt come on. it illuminated normally as all the other warning lights do when u start the car but this time it turned off shortly after. should i replace the sensors anyway even though the light isnt on? thanks

Before I would go and spend a lot of money try Lucas a fuel injection system cleaner. If the ox sensor was bad the light would stay on all the time. The quality of gasoline these days is not that good.I have done this on many cars and it cured the same problem.Good luck

Your oxygen sensor maybe malfunctioning still what may of happened when it got hooked up to the OBD meter or Scan tool they may have ereased the trouble code that was stored in the memory of the ECM (Brain) So therefore your check engine light would not illuminate until the emission controls went through so many drive cycles. It may take a week until the check engine light is back on again. When Oxygen Sensors Malfunction they don't normally have too much effect on the running of the engine but normally on the fuel milage.

If you took it in to have it tested and it is saying that that sensor is not working properly that means that not only means it is broken but it means that it may be misfireing as well. What I mean is that it may be working sometimes and other times it is not. Also if your mechanic hooked it up he may have shut the check engine light off for you. If you know that the sensor is bad you should change it to avoid further problems down the road.

I would wait and see if the sensor detects a fault again (and you see the check engine light again)
Sometimes the sensor gets a bad read and triggers the light.

A slow sensor will cause poor gas mileage.I recommend changing the sensor.

Check with a reliable mechanic. Engine lights are allways trouble. They usually come on 5 minutes before something seizes...!

humidity, moisture, can cause the light to come on, if the 02 sensor goes out, it's not anything that will leave you stranded, so hold off.

If you think it is bad, then yes, replace it. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
