I agree with you. This has become more and more popular among the generation X people. Our society has become more lax with some things such as viewing violence on TV and in movies, yet we have become more conservative with many things considered sexual. I suspect this repression manifests itself on Halloween, the one day where people can dress however they want and excuse it with "it's just a costume."
Notice, however, this theme is MUCH more common among women. I would say there are about the same percentage of sexy male costumes as there have been in the past. Men's desire to see sexy is greater than their desire to look sexy. Women have a great desire to be viewed as sexy but have to repress this more and more with increasing factors such as conservatism trends and gender equality, as well as advancements in technology which enable us to view more and communicate more.
Personally, I prefer to look at Halloween as a celebration of our feelings of fear and being scared. Isn't the horror theme still more popular than the sexy theme on Halloween? Given that spookiness takes precedence, I prefer to dress like a zombie, a monster, a ghoul, or a creepy clown.

I strongly agree with everything you're saying. Last halloween, I saw a lot of people, especially teens, dressed as prostitutes, pimps, sexy devils and sexuall costums. I remember in the old days when I was 10, people use to dress funny, and scary to show the love of halloween, now no one cares, they just want attention. now i'm to old of halloween, but I still love it. I enjoy it with my family, but I don't dress up anymore. Have fun this upcoming halloween

Sexual repression in American culture. Are you kidding me? Compared to what other culture? How an adult dresses on Halloween is an individual choice. Usually women dress more provocatively on that day is because it is the only day it is somewhat excusable; BUT I do think that young girls that are 13 and 14 should not be wearing that.
I use to do that on Halloween, but I realize that its much more fun wearing something creative. I was a marionette.

Don't blame Halloween - EVERY holiday has "turned into a day where people feel th need to express their represssed sexuality."
Victoria's Secrets selling Santa teddies - Valentine's Day, of course - Easter - St Patrick's - they may not get to dress in as wide a range of costumes for some of the others but the drive is still there...

Don't knock it. It's actually much closer to the original celebration than cute little kids running around looking for ways to make their dentists' rich.
All Hallows Eve, (in the Old Religion), used to be a very scary time, because that's when the veil between earth and eternity was very thin and all kinds of yuckies could get loose and do you a mischief. If you celebrated life at that time you could discombooberate the nasties. Best way to celebrate life is to get busy trying to make a new life. Don't you feel sorry for the ancient midwives who hadda have an exhausting time in late July/early August!?

i assume it is an attempt to attack clerical celibacy. Assumptions of what occurs to somebody whilst they choose for celibacy recommend no longer something. What concerns is medical and statistical fact. in actual fact that the main important team of molesters is fathers. Heterosexually lively husbands and fathers. So no rely how lots you hate the Church and desire to blame undesirable issues on her teachings, fact will defeat you in this one. EDIT: feels like a definite Glutton had a bad day What interior the worldwide are you speaking approximately?! I in no way rejected that the Church commited crimes. The Church is made up of adult males, and adult males sin. i do no longer think the asker is very prepared on the Catholic Church. Sorry, i think that grew to become into slightly an assumption, yet i do no longer think of i'm stretching how she feels too some distance... while you're confident that molest extra, then why do I even could desire to grant a source? i theory it unneccary as i theory it could kinda be hardship-loose knowldege if no longer hardship-loose sense... O_o Ya, i'm someone, as are clergymen, bishops and popes. I sin, you sin, all of us sin. Corrupt bishops have performed terrible issues yet it is not any excuse to get all offended on the Church, ok?

sexually repressed America? This, in a country that spends more dollars for on-line porno than tickets and merchandise sales for professional football, basketball and baseball combined? Where it is so easy to start a 1-900 number? or where anyone with a camera can go to spring break locations, and for a T-Shirt, get footage for his next big dollar selling video?
I don't think it's just Halloween. But I do think the holiday allows for some legitimacy in being able to act out fantasies to some degree...and also, some folks sorta got stuck on "sex sales" for wanting to impress others.

Its because adults are allowed to dress up and have fun too. And what better way to have fun and maybe get some action than show off your goods. I know I'd rather hit on a woman in a skanky school girl outfit than a woman in a dog costume.

It's a day when one is allowed to put on a mask and "anonymously" be whatever they want to be -- this is the same reason people enjoy Mardi-Gras or masquerade events.
... sex is FUN - and the fact that society doesn't let most of us openly express it leads us to these wild releases of energy when the reins are finally let go.
Let people dress up as they will... be scary... be sexy... be silly ... be cute ... just be happy and enjoy yourself on Halloween and stop worrying what everyone else is doing. Have fun.
(And I have no idea what I'm going to dress up as for Halloween this year)

I'm cosplaying for halloween. I've kinda had enough of slinky costumes as well although I've never really worn one of those.
On the other hand I don't think "repressed" is the right word.
