Well a personal check is easier if you need to prove payment. I would use money order though so the ex did not have my person bank info. If you needed to use a check, maybe you can open an account that you use only for child support, with a small balance say, $200.00 plus your monthly payments, that way you wont bounce a check and your ex on has access to a very little bit if they ever decide to take it from you.

I would pay by personal check because of the ease of record keeping but money order is fine as long as you keep good records. The record keeping is key, you are the one responsible for keeping records that you have paid. While the laws may not say this the reality is you must prove that you paid if the other parent says that you didn't, this is a case where you are guilty untill proven innocent. My brother recently had to come up with 15 years worth of canceled checks to prove he had paid, thankfully he had the records. The mother accused him of having paid nothing for years.

Use personal checks. You have proof of payment. All the purchase of a money order shows is that you purchased a money order--not that you sent it. If child support ever becomes contested, you'll need a proper paper trail.

Personal checks are easier to show payment history while not having to keep a record and storage for every M/O. If such a need is required.
