It is a myth that the Sahara Desert is underlain only by sand. A desert is generally defined as an area receiving less than 25 mm of precipitation annually, and there is no relationship between the amount of sand and precipitation. The world's largest desert is the Antarctic and you won't find much sand there.

In addition to large sand-covered areas with spectacular dunes, there are many bedrock mountain ranges in the Sahara Desert, with peaks such as Tahat reaching 2900 meters.
