I actually thought up until now that I was the only person who could remember that film - not one of my friends have ever seen or heard of it. I used to watch it as a child and I was always in floods of tears by the end of it.
I've been desperate to see it again and luckily I found it recently on DVD so obviously I bought it. I watched it again and the environmental message stands even stronger these days in my opinion. It's an excellent film - a must for a movie collection.
And yes, I still cried!

No, you aren't the only one who cried. My ex used to go on about this film, and he eventually got a copy of it to show me. He got really upset as he watched it, because of the moment when the robots are on the outside of the spaceship (trying not to give away any spoilers, here), and it did actually get to the point where he couldn't watch the film at all, because even the thought of the ending made him start to cry as soon as the film started, and he'd end up with a really bad headache.

Silent Running (1972)
The loner crew member of a spaceship harbouring Earth's last nature reserves goes renegade when he is instructed to jettison his beloved forests and return home. Accompanied only by three robots, he ponders the fate of his last pocket of nature and the murders of his fellow crew members in this far-looking speculative film.
Freeman Lowell looks after plants in giant space greenhouses. Back on earth, all the trees have long vanished, so Lowell puts a lot of heart into his work. When orders from earth are received to destroy the greenhouses, Lowell can't go through with it, and cannot persuade his three colleagues to help him save the plants, so he makes other "arrangements".
Bruce Dern ... Freeman Lowell
Cliff Potts ... John Keenan
Ron Rifkin ... Marty Barker
Jesse Vint ... Andy Wolf
rest of cast listed alphabetically:
Steve Brown ... Drone
Mark Persons ... Drone 2/Huey
Cheryl Sparks ... Drone 1/Dewey
Larry Whisenhunt ... Drone

Children of the Corn (if you mean SciFi as in SyFy or the SciFi channel) If you mean Science Fiction, then Star Wars is my favorite.
