well there is actually quite a few options when it comes to taking birth control. your friend was probably on the pill form and wants to get on the shot. so she was probably going to give you one month of her pills. most of the pills come in one month packages. there are some others though that are i think three months but mainly its just one month at a time. these you take one pill everyday at the same time. its important to remember this everyday. if you forget even one day, you can get pregnant. so if you are likely to forget then the pill probably isnt for you. and their are all varieties, so planned parenthood will help you pick which one is best for you. the kind your friend has may not be a good choice for you. and to only have one month, that wont help you if you cant afford to buy more months. then there is the shot (depo provera) like your friend wants you to get on, this is a shot i believe every three months and it will eventually make you stop your period all together. however there is a major side effect that some of my friends have experienced in the begining and that is bleeding. major bleeding for some time. its not anything serious but it tends to happen. i know one of my friends had her period for almost three months before it stopped completely. but this doenst happen to everyone, although a few of my friends had this happen. then there is the ortho evra patch. its a patch that you can wear on your arm, butt, or thigh and you change it once a week. then on the week of your period you skip that week of wearing the patch. i have never tried this one but i have heard in some cases that if its placed on your arm, you can sometimes taste the medicine going into your body. but once again, it only happens to some people. for me to suggest to you, the shot or pills or patch are probably the less expensive and better options. the others are implants and devices you put in yourself. these are diaphrams, iud's, norplant. instead of me trying to explain them to you, you can research them online here. i commend you for chosing to start using birth control. that is a very mature and adult deciscion to make on your own. one thing to keep in mind is, all birth control methods have some kind of side effect so dont be scared off. unfortunately, i am sorry that you have to pay for your perscriptions. but i will tell you that some states do make you pay regarless of how long you have been in the states. hopefully it will be something you can afford. good luck!

Birth control pills do not make you gain weight, I'm sorry but I grew up believing that and never had that problem. It isn't the pills themselves that cause it, it is the alterations in your hormones and the actions you take after that, that make you gain weight. The shot she is talking about is Depo, it's a shot that you get I think ever 6 months or something, and that's it. I don't suggest it though there have been many people who stay on their period for long lengths of times (months) and people who don't have there's at all for months, and then they couldn't know really if they do become pregnant. I don't know where you are from though but in Florida, they have a law now where you do not even have to see a doctor to get the perscription, and you get it filled there at planned parenthood, and you just pay the monthly fee. If you are saying you can not afford it, then let me tell you, that means you could not afford a baby, and there is still a chance you can get pregnant on the pill. So if you can't afford the pill, then you can't afford a baby, and so you shouldn't even be putting yourself in a situation where you can not afford the consequences. Good Luck and be safe, and remember birth control does not fight against all of the STD's in the world.

The shot she is talking about is the Depo shot. I'm currently on it and I suggest you do not take it. My peiords are extremely long (My first peiord I had after taking the shot was 2 weeks & my second one I started August 7th & I just got off of it yesterday). This may sound nasty but, it hurts for me to poop & it hurts so bad that it makes me bleed when I take a crap. It sounds nasty but, it didn't start this until I got on the shot. After you get off of the shot it can also make you have really irregular peiords and if your planning on getting pregnant right away after getting off the shot, it may not happen. I've only gotton 1 Depo shot & my next one is due this Friday and I'm going to swith to "BIRTH" control pills.
But, then again, the shot is more affective than the pill. But, if I happen to get pregnant, I will accept it & do what I have to do.
Just like another person said, if you can't afford "BIRTH" control pills, then you shouldn't be having sex because you can get pregnant on the pills. So, be extremely careful & always use condoms. Or, just don't have sex.
Good-Luck

Not everyone gains weight and that is a side effect of most birth control, cept condoms of course. The shot is also a form of birth control given a few times a year. Call the clinic you went to and ask them about it, you may want to ask about the patch too. Also you can ask them if there are any free clinics in the area. In Boston we have a clinic in the high school that offers free pills.
Good Luck

The shot she is talking about is a shot you can get that is about the same as birth control. You shouldn't use her pills though. I heard it wasn't good to use other people's pills...
