Last week I found that I have bed bugs. I automatically knew it was my neighbor - I live in a condo building. My neighbor is an old man who has clutter EVERYWHERE. His place is a wreak. He has multiple rental units and brings stuff that people left to his place. It's just plain nasty. I had an exterminator come yesterday to spray and he also had to check my neighbors place, who happened to have hundreds behind his headboard and his place was covered in black droppings. The exterminator found about 30 live ones in my place. Who knows how long he had them. My HOA is forcing my neighbor to have his place professionally cleaned, even though he wanted to do it himself. My question is, I know I got them from him but I can't prove it. Is there any legal action I can take if they come back again? He's a dirty old man and I know this is going to happen again in a matter of time when he continues bringing things and strange characters into his place. Is my only option to move??

This is a CONDO, not an apartment. I own this place, as well as my neighbor. I don't have a landlord but I do have a HOA, home owners association. I am responsible for my extermination costs unfortunetly since I'm an owner. The exterminator said he can't prove it, but it's more than likely since he is infested worse than I am. Luckily I'm staying at my parents, where i can actually get a good nights sleep.

Since you own the condo, the only thing you can do is appeal to the HOA... Document the condition of his condo compared to yours and get "statements" from the extermination team as to where the bed bugs came from.. If his home is heavily infested chances are other condo's in the division will be infested as well... You may have to take the old man to small claims court to recover your fumigation costs... Take picture's and document everything...If you can take picture's of him bringing "things" into his condo and even the condo itself... That way if/when it does go to court you will be prepared...

That is absolutely disgusting - not to mention the health hazard! Here's what I would do: Get rid of the bed, mattress, box spring and all. Then have the place fumigated. Then I'd pour boric acid all over the carpet and leave it there for a couple of weeks which will prevent any left over eggs from hatching. After a couple of weeks I'd vacuum up the boric acid and have the place thoroughly and professionally cleaned. Only then would I buy a new bed and have it delivered to the apartment. I'd have the landlord flip the bill for all this including a couple of weeks stay at a decent hotel. Oh - and don't forget to call your local news station and the health department.
