I was told to drink something cold and sweet, like a milkshake before hand to get the baby really moving. If the baby is sleeping or inactive when the ultrasound is done he/she might keep her legs closed for the whole procedure and you won't be able to see his/her bits.

This actually is not a real good idea if you want an accurate exam of your baby. Remember, this is a medical exam, and finding out the sex is an added benefit. Have you ever tried to take a picture, with a regular camera, when the subject was moving around? Say you wanted to take a photograph just of a person's right leg, as they were running. For example, in order to get an image of the four chambered heart, the ultrasound technologist must get that image focused and in the correct plane. It is very difficult, when you almost have it, and the baby moves. I am not sure if you want a frustrated ultrasound technologist, who's eyes and scanning hand are getting tired! In fact, if the baby is very active, the same thing happens when we try to see the sex. We try to get the genitals in the right projection, then the baby moves. You cannot see things in detail if they are moving. So, the OJ or soda can actually make it where you cannot see the sex of the baby. The idea of an ultrasound is to make sure all your baby's parts and pieces are there and not misformed, and that should be foremost in your mind.
If I have a baby with the legs crossed, or in another position which hides the genitals, I will do the MEDICAL study, then have the mother empty her bladder....even if the bladder is not very full. After the mother has moved around, most every time, the baby has also moved, and we are able to find out the sex.

I've never heard of it having anything to do with the kidneys. I'd be more suspicious that no orange juice would be because the sugar in it will make the baby into a jumping bean. This ultrasound has several things they have to get clear pictures of, gender is just a bonus in the doctor's eye. They need clear pictures of the heart and a few other structures in the brain and spine. If baby is hyped up on OJ then it may not hold still long enough in the position they need for the pictures. As for coffee it is more of a diuretic, which means it will actually dehydrate you more then help fill your bladder. They need your bladder full to help lift baby up higher for an easier time getting their images.

I drank the 32 oz of water and some oj before my 20 week ultrasound. My bladder was so big by the time we got there that the technician had me go the restroom before she would look anymore. And all that oj made it so the baby was moving around so much that we couldn't get a good picture of her face or profile. It also made it harder for the technician to get proper pictures to measure head arms and legs to see if the baby was measuring the right size for 20 weeks. But in the end we were able to see that we are absolutley haveing a girl. My friends all told me to drink the OJ to ensure that the baby isn't sleeping and in a position where you can't tell....

I was told that I am supposed to start counting kicks and if I don't feel anything for awhile, I should drink some juice. The natural sugars give baby a healthy jump start. So I would say that its true simply because an active baby makes the it a whole lot easier to determine!

i was told by a woman that has already had children that during an ultra sound if the baby is not making much movement that u might be given orange juice cause there is something about orange juice that wakes the baby up and makes them more active for the time being. with me if it is juice or just regular fruit seems to make the baby active. at times the baby moves so much it makes me think it's having a party

Never heard of that. When I had mine done I had to drink 36oz of water I beleive, an hour before the u/s. I think they said you get a clearer veiw. I could be wrong on that part. I am going for a 4-D u/s here in a few weeks, but I will def. drink something sweet or something that way they babe is moving.

I hadn't heard this, but I guess the sugar makes sense. I don't know why OJ though. Several people mentioned sugary drinks and that I can see.
I go in Sept 25 to find out, so maybe I'll try this.
good luck!

I didn't eat or drink anything before my ultra sound and they had no problem. Even if he/she is moving around, there's no guarantee that it won't be hiding their parts. Take some orange juice with you, it should kick in almost instantly. Also try to relax before the scan. Babies generally move while the mother is laying still.
