I recently lost power to my freezer in the garage and lost a lot of food due to spoiling. I have heard there is an alarm that plugs into a wall outlet and sounds when power is lost to that outlet. Is this true???

Mine emits a beeping sound and turns on a light attached to it. You plug it into the outlet, the light glows orange all the time when the outlet is working and you can plug in an appliance into the front of it. When the power goes out, the light turns on like a regular lamp and the beeping starts. I got mine at Fry's Electronics.

I don't know about that, but they do make alarms for freezers that will go off if the temperature gets too high. We have them here at work.

They are also available with a battery backup in the event you loose power to that circuit or is accidently unplugged.
