I know how to create a basic personal page, but what I am looking to build: a swap site that allows my members to upload photos and list their items, allows people to sign up for memberships (like ebay for example), how to search for listings on my site only (ebay is an example again - like searching by category or by state), allowing members to leave feedback. I really don't want to pay someone right now to do it, I need and want to learn how to. Thanks so much!

What you're looking to do is more involved than just slapping a few pages on the internet.

You'll need to learn XHTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL (and don't use ASP if you don't have a Windows server or let anyone talk you into doing it that way. Windows servers are junk IMO.)

JavaScript, also learn that... or you can bite the bullet and have someone who knows what they are doing, do it for you. I know you don't want to and you don't want to hear it, but if you're looking to get this site up and running, then you need to hire someone.

You're not going to learn what you need to in a week unless you don't sleep. Trust me, it's not worth it.

Shop around for the best people and the best prices to get your site done. If you're in no rush to do it, then learn. Buy books, read online articles and sites.

You're looking to do what phpFox http://www.phpfox.com/ does. Or you can find a script on a script site that can do that for you. http://hotscripts.com

Or come to think of it, even Coppermine or Gallery can do that for you as well.

You are looking at a top sort of site that is very complicated and i don't even know that...you need your own servers, know how to set up a web link to your server, metatags, this is a massive task and i would not recomend making this sort of site unless you had years of web design, there are no websites for this as it would be 1 million pages....
