Sorry to hear your parents are splitting up....it's no fun for any one.
Now is a great time to buy a notebook because of the back to school deals that are all over the place. If you are wanting it to last a few years until you go off to college, don't go for a low end model. You may as well spend the extra to get a good one.....

Since Windows Vista just came out, Microsoft won't have another desktop OS update for at least three years, so you'll be fine in that aspect. The biggest change in three years will be in the hardware, but if you are just looking for something for getting online and writing papers, the current hardware out now is more than sufficient for many, many years to come.
I am still using a 7-year-old Gateway desktop computer. Of course I've upgraded a few things over the years, but it is working well still. I work in IT, so I know what is out there, but I don't play 3D games or anything too demanding so my system is fine for me.
Anyway, I like this Gateway: http://www.gateway.com/retail/mx8738.php. It has a 17" screen AND a numeric keypad which is nice if you have to type a lot of numbers.

Sorry to hear about the divorce, I hope you have someone you can talk to about that
As far as getting a laptop I think that would be a great choice get it today don't delay just make sure that you get a good one. Do not settle for el cheapo
In three years when you get ready to go to college your computer should be fine.

Tough stuff, divorces are terrible.
Chances are in 3 years you can get a way better machine for the same price. I'd hold out, especially if you don't need it right now.

If you buy it now, it will be slow compared to the ones that come out in three years for the same price.

Yes. It is worth it to buy a laptop now. You should get a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092. I have one, and I love it. I would highly recommend it.

In the next 3 years you'll probably need a new one anyway.
