Those were oranges you saw. Goldfish love them. If you go back to that pet store, I'm sure they carry fruit clips(suction cupped clips specifically for your fish tank). Slice a thin enough piece to fit in the clip and place in the tank. After an hour or so, remove what is left(should just be the rind).

Orange slices are very good for Goldfish. They help improve color and provide a tasty treat for them. Putting a couple thinly sliced orange slices in the tank would be a good idea. Also, give them a pinch (about the size of a quarter) of frozen blood worms once a week.

As a treat 2-4 times a week in lieu of the fish pellets or flakes, you can give fish, especially goldfish, a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and protein-based treats such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, tubifex worms, insect larvae, krill plankton, chopped earthworms carefully selected from your yard where no pesticides or fertilizers are used and chopped cooked eggs. Also, goldies LOVE almost anything from the produce section in your supermarket. Romaine lettuce (no iceberg please), cooked fresh or thawed frozen shelled peas, melons, cucumber, grapes, oranges, spinach, parsley, dandelion leaves, broccoli, zucchini, strawberries, bananas. Parboil your tougher foods such as broccoli and carrots. Don't use anything that has been salted or flavored. Otherwise, try absolutely anything at all. Goldies are very adventurous in the food department. You can also make them a gel food by combining baby food, such as strained peas, peas and carrots, spinach, bananas, etc. and mixing it with unflavored gelatin.

the pet store told me to add a slice of lemon to help with vitamins and kill bad bacteria that may be harmful to fish. He said leave it in there for one day and then take it out. My guppys and mollies also ate at it.
