That is a really good question. I think that if a person is really secure about their beliefs, whatever they may be, they shouldn't need those beliefs validated by everyone else. What I mean is, if someone is preaching or pushing their beliefs on someone else, or trying so hard to convince another person, who are they really trying to convince?? I am an agnostic and I believe in evolution and the big bang, but I don't need anyone else to believe in it, I have my own reasons.
And I agree with you about religion being theory not fact. Just looking at all the different "theories" out there confirms this. If there was any fact-based religion, there wouldn't be so many in the first place.

Religious people are religious because they are either terribly afraid of having no meaning or terribly afraid of finding out that something that has been a part of their lives since they can remember is a lie. They want there to be a God. That's why they argue so religiously (pun!) about the subject. Atheists tend to realize the many negative effects of religion on society after they become atheists and argue religiously over it in vague hopes of trying to make the world a better place. That or they're just arrogant. Either way they're probably right, but that's beside the point. Now, I'm a live and let live person, and think that everyone should be able to practice whatever religion they want (or none at all). However, the debate is never going to cease due to the religious peoples' belief that what they think is what everyone should think and the non-religious peoples' belief that they shouldn't in addition to both groups feeling like the other group should come to their respective sides... It's all ridiculous really. People need to start minding their own business.

Well, I suppose I am guilty of this. I have looked into arguments on both sides, and they go quite far, and into very deep levels. Neither side has quite gotten to the answer, but I don't believe it is impossible. I am a firm believer that there is a "right" and a "wrong" to everything, and the question of whether God exists or not is of much importance to us.
Maybe it is true that it cannot be answered, but I don't think that we should give up trying. The arguments I hear and come up with myself sort of paint a picture for me, and this helps me gain a clearer understanding of what I really believe.
So, if you want to know why people are obsessed with the question, it is because God gives us a purpose in life, while a lack of God gives us a lack of purpose. That's how it is for me anyway.

So you believe that the bible was a bunch of crap some crazy people wrote along time ago? Can you really be a christian and believe your god would do that?
When you talk about religion I really think you are refering to the church and its people and not the beliefs they are based upon

what you believe to be true, I may not and what I believe to be true you may not. as long as we agree to respect each others right to believe the way we want then really what or what we don't believe in is a moot point. because each mortal has the free will and right to believe the way one wants as long as they respect differing viewpoints like they want theirs respected.

I think some people prefer to talk about things they can't prove to avoid having a life. It can not be proved or disproved.
