My friends monitor does not work on his laptop (i think because the video card is fried [since an alternate monitor does not work either]), but his computer boots up fine. Is there a way you can start up the computer, get to DOS, then type a command to send a folder('My Documents') to an external hard drive.

I would greatly appreciate any help on this matter.

It may be easier and faster to do this. Instead of trying to boot the computer without a screen to look at, you may try to remove the hard drive from the laptop, then put it on one of those 2.5" portable USB enclosures. I think they're about $20. Then just attach that to another computer and browse the external drive for all the files you want.

Ok, so the monitor does not work in windows, but you can see a DOS prompt just fine?

If you can see anything on the monitor at ANY time on the screen when it first turns on, the monitor is working.

Can you see words and other information when you first turn it on? If so, the problem might just be resolution related, but without more details I can't be sure.

Feel free to message me with some follow-up information.

Xcopy is what people use to copy many files, just type Xcopy/? and it should tell you the right parameters to use. I would hook up a separate monitor using the laptop external monitor connection, and then copy the files using the Dos window.
